Ingwe Leopard Research
Eight reserves have already joined the project since its inception in November. Read more below to understand how they are contributing to leopard conservation!
Did you know?
Did you know that leopard population estimates in South Africa vary from 2,800 to 11,600 individuals? But how can be taken best management decisions, such as deciding on the number of hunting permits to deliver, without even knowing how many leopards are actually out there?
There are many projects in South Africa that focus on leopard research but there is an opportunity to spread the research to more areas. Help us refine those numbers by joining and supporting the project.
How are we going to achieve this?
Through the creation of a network of reserves, lodges & wildlife estates in South Africa which will participate in a leopard monitoring project. By going on safari, guides and guests are the only ones who have constant and long-term access to information on wildlife species, at no extra cost. Each sighting and the associated photographs are highly valuable information for research & conservation.
Residents of wildlife estates and managers of reserves who have set up camera traps also have a role to play and can share their data.
Who has joined us already?
Since its inception in November 2022, eight reserves and one wildlife estate joined the project. They are all sharing their leopard sightings through the SMART conservation mobile app and/or share their camera trap images.
Altogether, the reserves submitted 37 leopard sightings and 39 photographs on the SMART app, 54 ID kits, 202 camera trap images/videos (including historical ones) and 5 citizen scientists participated.
204 photographs were uploaded on the African Carnivore Wildbook platform, that uses artificial intelligence to help with individual carnivore identification.
Don’t miss out and susbcribe to be informed about the publication of the next article regarding the use of technology for conservation.
