The development of artificial intelligence (AI) for wildlife conservation has revolutionized the field. Being able to individually identify endangered species is critically important for their management.

1. Helps tackle global challenges such as biodiversity loss

The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aims at ending poverty, improve health and education, reduce inequality, increase economic growth and tackling climate change and the biodiversity crisis by 2030. SDGs 14 and 15 (respectively Life below water and Life on land) are benefitting from the recent development of artificial intelligence. There are many platforms that have developped algorithms that are trained to detect and individually identify species on thousands of images shared by the public and by research organizations. With these new tools, censuses are conducted on a daily basis which makes it possible to analyse variations in population numbers and take necessary conservation decisions.
